American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
All of Commonwealth Neonatology’s physicians are members of the American Academy of Pediatrics. This organization of 60,000 pediatricians is committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

Bon Secours Richmond Health System
Commonwealth Neonatology practices exclusively through the Bon Secours Richmond Health System at St. Mary’s, Memorial Regional and St. Francis. This unique affiliation allows us to serve the greater Richmond community in a number of ways. Our associates participate in the patient education programs offered by Bon Secours to expectant and new mothers, as well as other collaborative programs with administrative, nursing and risk management staff.

Central Virginia Association of Neonatal Nurses (CVANN)
Joan Oberle of Commonwealth Neonatology is the president of this local chapter of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), and Lisa Hicks, Deb Owens, Cyndi Kemp and Beverly Mallon (all of Commonwealth Neonatology) are members of the chapter. The organization addresses the educational and practice needs within the evolving specialty of neonatal nursing, while giving all neonatal nurses national representation.

Children’s Medical Services International
Co-founded by Dr. Charles Bagwell, professor and chairman of the Virginia Commonwealth University Division of Pediatric Surgery, Children’s Medical Services International is a nonprofit organization that donates medical supplies and sends volunteer medical professionals to developing countries, primarily Jamaica.
Dr. Bonnie Makdad and Joan Oberle (both of Commonwealth Neonatology) are pleased to announce that they will be traveling to Jamaica in November 2008 to volunteer with Children’s Medical Services International.
Comfort Zone Camp (CZC)
Comfort Zone Camp is the nation’s largest independent bereavement camp in the nation. The camp welcomes children ages 7-17 who have experienced the death of a close loved one. Dr. Bonnie Makdad serves as a volunteer and fundraiser for
CZC, and Joan Oberle is a volunteer and former board member.

Dr. Bonnie Makdad serves on the board of the Commonwealth Parenting Center, a Richmond-based organization that helps parents and families in our community develop effective parenting capabilities through education, support and skill development.

National Certification Corporation (NCC)
The National Certification Corporation is a not for profit organization that provides a national credentialing program for nurses, physicians and other licensed health care personnel. All of Commonwealth Neonatology’s neonatal nurse practitioners are Board Certified by
NCC.

Vermont Oxford Network
Commonwealth Neonatology is proud to be a member of the Vermont Oxford Network, a non-profit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals dedicated to improving the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families. Established in 1988, the Network is today comprised of over 700 neonatal intensive care units around the world.
