Bon Secours NICU.net

Commonwealth Neonatology was instrumental in the development and implementation of Bon Secours NICU.net, a leading-edge communications technology developed by Bon Secours Richmond Health System in 2002.

Using a dedicated, secure URL and password-protection, the Bon Secours NICU.net transmits images of the infant from a tiny video camera in the baby’s isolette to a computer located at the mother’s hospital bedside. The direct connection allows the mother of a premature infant to keep her baby in constant view. After she leaves, the connection can still be maintained through a home computer with Internet access.

This technology provides ongoing reassurance to families who can check their babies at any time of day or night throughout the year.

The response has been overwhelming. Parents, physicians and nurses alike say the project has dramatically improved parent communication, satisfaction and confidence in their own capability to care for their new babies at home.
